The Teenage Trio
I was surprised at how good Perks of being a Wallflower is. Yes, it has all your teen movie cliches, the misfit group of friends, hidden gay relationship and the geeky, shy boy who can’t say how he really feels. However, it’s not the setup of the film but the execution of the editing, acting and story of the protagonist Charlie that elevates this far beyond other coming of age romances. Cliches don’t have to be bad, the film never focuses on the ‘ridiculous situation’ at hand, but instead on how the character’s philosophy have progressively grown from past and present events.
